THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS

The historic and legendary resort town of Palm Springs, one hundred miles southeast of Los Angeles in the upper Coachella Valley, has long been the oasis of Hollywood and all of Southern California combining that needed weekend getaway in the sun or snow, exercise and relaxation, culture, seclusion and diversity in just a short drive "over the hill."

In addition to being a long term destination for those retiring to a life of leisure, Palm Springs is a growing community of new homes, businesses, and clean industrial uses. The village is a mixture of festivals, historic sites, and unique upscale boutiques, restaurants, and quaint outdoor dining. The Palm Springs International Airport serves major cities in the Country. Known as the Golf Capital of the World, private and public golf courses are matches for the novice and pro alike. Palm Springs hails its own Ted Robinson designed Tahquitz Creek Resort Course, as well as the Arnold Palmer managed Legend Course.

At an elevation 450', Palm Springs is comprised of 50 square miles of desert, and 34 square miles of hills rising above the desert floor in the Santa Rosa Mountains. The majestic Mt. San Jacinto backdrops the central business district. Alternating sections of land are held by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Pristine palm canyons, waterfalls, big horn sheep, desert flora and fauna, "wind farms", and unique horseback riding and hiking trails attract visitors from around the world.

ENVIRONMENT

Long since doing its part in protecting the environment, Palm Springs has been utilizing the increasingly popular alternative source of energy, wind turbine generators, a type of windmill that produces electricity by harnessing the wind. Wind turbine generators are much less harmful to the environment than burning fossil fuels, but they do require average wind speeds of at least 21 km/h (13 mph). The largest of these windmills stands 150 feet tall with blades half the legend of a football field. The compartments at the top containing the generator, hub and gearbox weigh 30,000 to 45,000 pounds. A wind turbine's cost can range upwards to $300,000 and can produce 300 kilowatts an hour - the amount of electricity used by a typical household in a month. Almost all of the currently installed wind electric generation capacity is in California. The high-tech megatowers are engineered in cooperation with NASA and nursed by federal and state subsidies. This wind farm on the San Gorgonio Mountain Pass in the San Bernardino Mountains contains more than 4,000 separate windmills and provides enough electricity to power Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley.

RECREATION

When one considers recreation in Palm Springs, it rarely comes to mind that skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, and camping are some of the fun past times available in the desert. In addition to being known for its abundance of championship golf courses and world class spa resorts, Palm Springs provides recreation and activities for every member of the family.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway carries passengers from the desert floor to snow-capped mountains in just minutes.

The new Palm Springs Skate Park will be available to both skateboard and in-line skating enthusiasts. The layout will feature components to challenge the skill levels of all who dare enter. The park will have boxes, spines, rails, hips, wedges and, of course, excellent bowls as deep as nine feet. Whether skaters are just beginning and mastering the art of street skating and their first ollie or if they have gone on to the curved surfaces of transition skating or the more daring aerial maneuvers of the vert lover, every discipline will be challenged at the Palm Springs Skate Park.
